Same old story, the Japanese start eating Detroit's lunch, and then GM et al decide it's time to improve, only to find that the Japanese are kicking their tails.
If they're only just now starting from scratch, I'd expect to see no new models from this for at least 3-5 years from now, at which point Toyota, Honda, and Nissan (licensing the toyota system) will have a wide variety of models out there. GM had hung its hat on the hydrogen pipedream. Unfortunately for them, the market is going for hybrids since they're a) available now and b) effective. I'd expect Saab to be amongst the last of the GM brands to get a hybrid since their sales are so small.
I've read that GM, et al. were interested in protecting their investments in big V-8 engine and transmission production rather than in pursuing new market segments. Anyone with more knowledge care to comment?
