The SVC engine was reportedly killed by GM after receiving numerous engineering awards and currently resides under a staircase in Trollhatten. GM is more interested in V8 engines than efficiency.
However, Saab recently announced a 9-5 model which will run off of 85% ethelene and 15% gasoline for the Swedish-only market. Sweden and much of Europe is hopeful to convert from gasoline to ethelene as it is a renewable resource which adds zero net CO2 to the environment. Brazil's cars mostly run on ethelene generated from sugarcane.
Midwestern corn farming states like Iowa are constantly trying to lobby the U.S. government to use more ethelene, but aside from replacing MTBE as a gasoline additive in California, I don't think they've been that successful.
