79 Scirocco 125,000 miles
84 Scirocco 130,000 miles
87 GTI 100,000 miles
92 900S (wanted a 4cyl 5spd with hatch AND more room) 202,000 miles
97 9000 CS 97,0000
99 Viggen 55,000

The German cars had great seats, reliability, good handling even at base levels and could be easily modified by robbing the parts bins of higher level models. The SAABs suited my getting older body that appreciated style, comfort and room without giving up the efficiency of a 4cyl 5spd and the hatch. (The Viggen is a different animal, less SAAB-like in finish and practicality but a phenom in handing and power.)

My favorites: the 79 Scirocco, light, great handing and classic Guigario styled good looks that seem relevant today even though styles have gone more rounded and organic; and the 9000 - a more comfortable 900 classic with more room and power. The C900 is a great ride and hard to give up. And the Viggen reminds me of 100 mph blasts of the GTI. Wait- thats all of them.

Its a logical progression, and gives you a more distinctive driving experience than Japanese or American models.

I just love going to Best Buy and putting a friend's new 32 inch TV in the C900 with room to spare or going to Depot and putting 8 foots lengths of 2x4s in the C900 or 9000 and closing the hatch. One friend never knew the 9000 had a hatch until I opened it! Great car for the highway.

do it, you will feel right at home. My suggestion: a 9000 Aero 5 speed.
