VW's are out of the mainstream of moderately priced cars. Saabs are out of the mainstream for premium cars. Both are European styled and engineered producing a further crossover. Folks who buy VWs didn't want another me too Japanese car. Folks who buy Saabs don't necessarily want a me too MBZ or BMW. Both Saab and VW are alternatives to more common brands in their segments, though that isn't the reason everyone buys one, it is indeed a large segment.
When folks grow out of their VW's they'll likely shop Saab as well as Audi, particularly with the superior reliability and safety of the Saab vs the Audi.
I myself am a former VW salesperson, '86-93 and have owned many VWs and Audis.
