I owned an '87 Jetta for 11 years & 235k miles. The only brand new car I ever bought. I liked it a lot. Since then, I have owned two used Saab 900's. I found both Saabs to be a welcome change from the VW. Amongst many things, winter driving is now so much better & safer. My bottom line: Liked my Jetta, but love the Saabs. A much more solid feel all around. I cannot say reliability has been much different, though.
(I still have a VW Vanagon camper - in a class by itself!)
