I have a 2000 1.8t lightly modded Passat and a pure 1999 9-5 SE (v6). I love both cars. The 9-5 is noticeably wider and larger inside and feels like a more substantial car and is imho more comfortable. The Passat is no slouch as confort goes but I absolutely love the seats in the 9-5. The manual shift Passat with a slightly firmer than stock suspension and ecu (chip) upgrade is by far the more fun car to drive but that may be more a product of the mods and the manual shifter. The Saab is the car for a long trip.
This is purely subjective but in some ways the VW seems better engineered; things like the turn signal, the switches and buttons and even the closing of the front doors and trunk posess a solid tactile feeling in the VW that is missing from the Saab. The body panels on the VW are very close together where there is a chasm between the Saab's panels. Some of the plastic used in the 9-5 interior looks and feels very cheap compared to the VW. But having said that, the VW is definitely the less reliable car of the two. If not for an extended Warranty on the VW I would be seriously hating the car.
