I came close a few weeks back. I got out ( '96 9000 CSE) locked the car with the remote. Then I remembered I needed something from the trunk. I undid that with the remote. Got the stuff out, and ALMOST closed the hatch with the keys inside. This was 400 miles from home without a spare key. It would have been interesting to see if my AAA from the U.S. worked in Canada.
In cars without a remote that require a key to lock the driver's door, it is still possible to lock yourself out, usually via the passenger side. But the move I almost made is possible in most cars. As Jimmy Buffett says, "there is no dumb-ass vaccine."
