I've always had a dog, but used a cage for the first time 15 years ago when we got a new puppy.....we figured we'd give it a try. The dog didn't mind the cage, it saved us a lot of potential problems, and when he was about 8 or 9 months old, the crate was broken down and never used again.
We just got a new puppy a week ago. We broke out the cage and it's been a blessing. Your dog will actually feel more secure in the cage when you're not home than if you left him with the run of the house. They instinctively will not (usually) soil the cage, it will save you from damaged furniture or other articles until they learn what's expected of them, and you can leave the house without worry. You're actually being kinder to the dog because you will not have to reprimand him for something that he doesn't remember doing anyway.
