So why not drug him? It will mellow him out and he will grow up to be a mellow dog.
Ask your vet for the best drugs/dosage.
here is another suggestion. Get another puppy for his companion. If that's too much, how about one of those "robot" dog?
You can also keep your dog occupied when you leave the house like feed him some food (wet dog food from the can - they love it) right before you go and by the time he finishes his food, you are no where to be found. Than the dog is not "feeling" the separation and thinks you are in bathroom or something and just wait for you. (till you come home).
Good luck. I never had crates/cages, but my adopted dog from the vet was really cool and gave me no problems.
