Excellent Point!!!
We had a Honda. Dead reliable, in fact near perfect. Sold it at 85K. Friends have the same model (Accord) but well over 100K. They are now having the more significant repairs. One little fact with some of the Japanese cars is that when things go bad, you need to replace assemblies, not just the bad part. As such, the cost is relatively high.
I used to have VWs. Many trash VWs as unreliable. Mine were always reliable, BUT... they have small repair and maintenance costs that add up very fast. I did most of my routine maintenance, plugs, tune-ups, brakes, shocks, oil changes, etc. Based upon what the VW dealer charged for those services, they would not even be close to the Honda in reliablity. The VWs however were much more fun to drive. If asked about VWs, I will tell people that they are very reliable for major repairs, but the routine stuff will get you.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, "reliability" has been interchanged with little or no maintenance, or tolerant of major abuse. This is compounded by dealers extorting customers like charging $18 for a Bosch platinum plug that I can get for $3.50.
Fortunately, my Saab and dealer have been pretty good so far... KNOCK on wood...
