i bought an edmonds astroscan for my son at that age ( 8 yrs back). great optics. not too much later the meade tracking units came out. i'd suggest biting the bullet and splurging on a unit that lets you select the target. even finding the moon by hand and keeping it in view can be arduous, tis better to just observe the majesty of a full moon and the jagged mountains on it's horizon than to try to keep it view/focus. refractors are even more problematic because of the long nose /tail over the fulcrum. i had one of those types for the other most wonderful child 15 years back. very difficult to keep stellar objects in view, field of view or automated tracking are best. keep in mind a good unit will last a long long time. my first three refractors are in land fills or garage sales somewhere. my astroscan will last generations. if it i dont run over it anyway. :)
