ahh, something i know about! living in nola for 2 years now:
some critiques of already mentioned restaurants, plus a few others:
1. acme oyster: good vibe, usually good food, but sometimes hit or miss. cheap though, i'd probably check it out.
2. crawfish: my personal favorite thing when friends are in town; hit "the big fisherman" on magazine. they'll steam up crawfish, shrimp, crabs, alligator sausage, potatoes, etc for you for cheap. take it all across the street to the bulldog bar, sit out on the picnic tables, order a couple of pitchers of beer and enjoy the people watching. all on magazine & 8th (near louisiana). $5-10 cab from the quarter, or take the streetcar up st charles and take a very pleasant 10min walk the rest of the way (you should ride the streetcar anyway). i would definitely do this if the weather's nice.
3. dick and jenny's: awesome. i had some fantastic duck last week. be prepared to wait 1-2 hours for a seat on the weekend.
4. matt & nattie's: also fantastic. no wait. located in riverbend (also accessible by streetcar). other great restaurants in the area: jaque-imo's (incredible, long wait, no reservations), dante's (great patio, great food), brigsten's.
5. in the quarter: any brennen's restaurant, antoine's (still haven't been there). i'd avoid all the emeril's restaurants. great service, but overpriced (but not bad) food. central grocery is THE place for a muffaletta. cafe du monde is a must. beignets, coffee and cafe au lait are the only things on the menu for a reason.
6. commander's: awesome, pricey. nice cemetary next door if you're into that kind of thing. also near street car.
7. port of call: good, if not overrated burgers. great baked potato. long wait on the weekends.
8. if you'd like something off the beaten path, check out faubourg marigny, just past the quarter. funky clubs, good restaurants, cool vibe.
wow, that didn't even begin to touch it. we take our food seriously! any other ?'s, just ask!
