Hi Gloria,

DI stands for Direct Ignition. Every 4 cyl 9-3 and 9-5 has them. They are the long black part that is on top of the engine that goes right across the engine. It may have the imprint of 'direct ignition' on it. i can't remember. But this essentially replaces the traditional Ignition Ditributor (tells when to fire the spark plug) that is driven by the cam shaft. The Saab DI cassettes are prone to failure anytime after 50k miles. Some earlier, some much later. Usually, if you see a newer Saab stranded on a road, it's more than likely a DI failure. It costs about $350. Another $75 for installation at dealer. Although it is VERY easy to replace by yourself if you have a set of internal torx driver bit and a small flat head screw driver. Less than a 10 minute job that typical dealer will charge you for a full half an hour, if not an hour. Now, since your Saab is under warranty, roadside assistance and the repair is free. But if you are thinking of keeping your 9-3 beyond warranty, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are prepared to do some work yourself or have the money and patience to let someone else do it for you. Like I said before, based on my experience and experience of many die-hard Saab lovers here, unless you can accept that a price of owning an older Saab includes being religious at routine maintenance and incidental failures here and there, you may be better off to look for something more reliable. But then, may be you will be lucky with your Saab and be trouble free. Who knows, but expect the worst. Because everything else would be a bonus :)

Good luck,

James from Michigan...
