Assume all other drivers are dangerously incompetent. When you see signs of inattention (like failing to signal turns) or lack of control (drifting around on the road), figure out how to lose that puppy as soon as possible.
Don't let a following vehicle force you to drive faster than appropriate for the conditions. Hold to a reasonable speed and find a way to let them by.
While you want to be aware of what's to the side and in back of you, your main focus should be on what's out in front.
Check your rearview mirror often enough to keep a running inventory of the cars are behind you. When one disappears, it may be passing and in your blind spot.
At night, you can lessen the impact of an oncoming vehicle's headlights by dropping your focus a bit down and to the right. Don't look directly into the approaching lights.
