You have given thoughtful and useful comments that generally converge with our own. A couple of other thoughts on your thoughts.
There seems to be two views of the value of education. One is economic- one will earn more with an education and it is a good investment. The other is "spiritual'- the main reason to go to school is to enhance your understanding of the world, the value is intrinsic. Both views have validity and proponents, I lean strongly toward the latter camp.
His mother is a Harvard alum ('74) and dad a med school faculty member. It's not clear if that was a boon or a burden. I do not know how to judge the essays.
If he lacks anything it's a "fire in the belly" with direction and intensity. Sometimes such a rejection can ignite the flame needed. I agree with you nice well-wishers that he will do just fine. Thanks
