I grew up in Fairfax County and my parents still live there. They live in a million dollar house, which used to be a $400K house about five years ago. It's just a big box made of 2x4s and chip board!
I personally wouldnt consider buying in that market unless you really love the area and want to live there for a long time. Also, consider the cost of property taxes and insurance if you buy, which could easily be $400-600 / month.
Although pets make it tough to find a good rental, keep looking.
In general, Va had better schools than Md back when I was a kid. Dont really know anymore, but I think Va is nicer. Compare income taxes, though, Va might be a lot higher now. If your kids are almost college age, Va definately has better colleges. (sorry for the flame bait:)
You didnt say where you would be working, but try to find a place close to your work to minimize the commute. Commuting long hours cuts your life short.
Good luck
