Blurring or otherwise obscuring license plates in pics

People, why do you do this? If I had a dime for every image of a car I have seen on the internet with its license plate(s) obscured, I would be a millionaire. Moreover, if I had a dime for ever time I have seen the license plate of a car out in the real world, I would be a gazillionaire! People, I don't get it. First of all, what *real* harm can anybody do with a license plate number, and secondly, how is a stranger seeing an image of your car's license plate any different than a stranger seeing it out on the street? Right now from my window I can read at least 20 license plates in plain view. We all see license plates every day out on the road. So what??? I have sold numerous cars on the internet and have displayed copious digital pictures of each car, all license plates unobscured and clear. Nothing bad ever happened to me.
Seems like good ol' unreasonable, unwarranted, quintessentially American paranoia to me. Someone must be out to get you!!!
