I've always blurred out license plates on pics posted on the internet. My feeling has been that a pic on the web gives that info a sense of permanance and global exposure that does not occur in real life. Instead of having one person (or a small group of people) writing down your plate number or taking a pic of it, it's exposed to millions of people at once. And instead of a plate number being seen visually and needing to be memorized or written down, anyone anywhere can have your plate number forever by simply right clicking and Save As.

The next question is, what can someone do to you with just your license plate number? I know people who have cop friends that can get all sorts of personal info from a plate number. For example, a friend was involved in a hit and run (my friend's car was parked and was hit). The car that hit him was found a few blocks away. He has a number of buddies in local law enforcement who gave my friend personal info about the person who hit him; name, address, phone number, DOB, insurance info, etc. It took my friend about 5 hours of searching and calling to get the guy's employment info, names of family members, arrest record (nothing serious), and several other public records. Within 48 hours he had an entire dossier of this poor guy who was a bad driver with an arrest record and no car insurance. The next step can be ugly if that info is in the hands of the wrong person. Why invite that step?
