Even with my brothers' C900s, and my e30 BMWs, I always put a protective blanket over the fender, as I didn't want anything greasy on my front, and the paint finish of the fender was still at risk of damage from me leaning on it.
I agree that the crease in the hood would result in a stronger hood, but I don't know if it's a structural member of the chassis, espcially compared to the fender and sub-frame assemblies. I think you'd have to fasten a hood to the car in a pretty robust way to make it a contributing factor in crash-worthiness...although any added strength does help.
