It really is a tough call

I justified my 9-3 by knowing I needed a better car for highway driving. I loved my C900- but a 3 speed auto just can't keep up with traffic on Michigan highways. I'm also hoping to have kids soon, and the 3DR C900 is hardly "car seat friendly". Aside from those factors I probably would have kept that car till it fell apart, like I did with my older 900 till the tranny died.
Car boredom is another story. I love cars, and love Saabs in particlar, but simple boredom, in absence of another compelling reason, just isn't enough justification for me. You ALWAYS loose money on cars, even if you can afford the payment and insurance. That money could be going to pay off consumer debt, student loans, or saving for a house or retirement. Sounds like you've got a good job, so you may well have the money for it, just make sure EVERY other need is covered first.
Also doesn't sound like you need to sell your wife on the idea, that always makes things easier ;)
Good luck with your decision, those 9-3SSs sure are nice cars.
