There are accidents and things that happen way beyond your control. We went to France 2 years ago, bought travel insurance--cost maybe $300 (it was priced as a percentage of our trip cost.). It covered medical, evacs, and trip interruptions.
We didn't need it. But our friends, who were coming back to the US a few days after us were going out via London, after a few days there. But there was a strike of some union and the airline they were on couldn't fly. So they had to spend 5 extra days in England (unbudgeted food, lodging, etc) before they could come home. Cost a couple grand or so, all out of pocket. But if it happened to us, our trip insurance would have covered the added cost. Plus if we needed medical help or an evac, we'd have been covered.
Our insurance was from Travel Guard--they have a menu of plans. Link below. There is also Diver's Alert Network, which was designed for scuba divers, but now covers just about anyone, including evac to a US hospital. It may have geographical limits, though. People from my daughter's HS have used it on some of the environmental trips they do to Mexico. And it's cheap.
For some things it pays to be a little paranoid.
