I didn't describe the situation to well, but it's a Cape Cod, 2 story plus a finished basement. The area I am talking about is on the second floor "crawlspace" which is really the area behind the kneewalls. There is an access panel on the wall that you enter. The peak of the roof is unaccessable, as it is over the bedroom ceiling on the 2nd floor. So it's the sides of the roof that I have access to. The kneewalls are about 4 foot high, and then slope up and in to match the contour of the roofline. I wish i could draw on this thing....
My main concern is the roof, and figuring out if I want to isolate the roof iteself and then have that dead space between the roof and walls, which is about 5 foot long and 3 feet high, easily large enough for me to crawl around in, or isolate it at the walls/floor of the attic and leave the dead space as cold air abutting the roof.
I am also concerned about the area between the 1st floor ceiling and the 2nd floor...er...floor. I understand that this is an often overlooked area of heat loss/air movement. I think I can seal it up in the crawlspace.
Now that I think about it, I might have to remove the insulation on the kneewalls, I think it's in backward. The kraft paper is facing out (toward the roof), that should be the other way around...
the prior owner was a bozo...so I am trying to "un screw" just about all of the house.
