The CVS camera thing made this idea pop into my head. There are lots of very smart people doing crazy mods. Can’t we pool their efforts and brain power into an organized open source project to make some really interesting stuff?
Volunteer work is donated labor. Nothing about the volunteer work requires pooled labor (ok, there might be some exceptions). Volunteer work is generally local people helping out locally. Open source projects are not limited geographically or to public good type projects. It could be an attempt to develop just about anything. There are many things that corporations can’t/won’t bother to make because they see limited ROI or it is beyond their core competencies or too interdisciplinary. People might enjoy using these things, but that is not the sole purpose of open source. There must a lot of intellectual property issues with open source. Maybe the software people have figured out some ways around this. When I say open source, I am not precluding selling and profiting from the labor.
