GSM vs. CDMA Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 11 Dec 2005 19:59:01 In Reply to: Re: Verizon wireless cell phone recommendations?, CWilson, Sun, 11 Dec 2005 13:37:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Verizon is a CDMA carrier, Cingular uses GSM (and TDMA) - two completely different digital formats for running a cellular network. Understanding the technology, I prefer CDMA hands down over the relatively primitive GSM. Unfortunately, for various reasons that I won't get into here, 75%+ of the world's cellular subscribers are currently using GSM, a technology that was developed in Europe, primarily by Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens. CDMA was developed in the US by Qualcomm, with large advances made in Korea and Japan.
When new phone models come out from non-Korean manufacturers, i.e. Nokia and Motorola, the GSM version is usually first due to the larger market size (3:1) - this explains why there have been GSM RAZRs since last spring, and the CDMA version is just arriving now. Nokia had used their own chipset for their CDMA phones, and they were deficient as a result - they may have bought into the industry standard Qualcomm chipset recently, which EVERYONE ELSE has been using. Korean manufacturers, i.e. Samsung and LG, have their domestic market to drive the introduction of CDMA phones, but they have been pretty current in producing equivalent GSM models.
