Do you watch This Old House on PBS?
Last season they bought an old farmhouse and built much of it from the ground up. They did keep much of the original framing where it wasn't damaged, for sentimental reasons, but, like Chaz mentioned in his post, they put in radiant floors, thermal windows, expandable foam insulation, and all kinds of other techniques to seal off drafts and reduce energy loss.
I would buy an old farmhouse and completely renovate it. A farmhouse in bad shape wouldn't be worth much. Probably worth the price of the land it's on.
The benefit would be that fences would already be up, pastures might be defined so you wouldn't have to clear too much land (lots of work), and you'd already have a poll-barn ready to be used!
Good luck.
