On a trip like you describe, the mpg difference could easily be attributed to elevation gain or wind. You might have been going slightly down hill with a tail wind on the return trip.
However, gasoline brand did make a different kind of difference on my old Volvo. I could burn 87 in it as long as I stuck with Phillips or Conoco, but 87 in anything else would cause it to throw a code for the O2 sensor.
