I have been folloing this thread with some interest, as I've wondered these exact questions myself over many years. For the record, I have always used the shift into neutral when coasting method, if I am coming to a stop. If I plan to not stop, I will stay in gear. Anyway... here's what I don't get. Several people have said that an engine uses zero fuel when decelerating. Also it would seem that the engine is using zero air, since the throttle butterfly valve is completely closed, right? So is it also using zero spark, since there is nothing to ignite? If all the above is true, how is the engine running at all?? I always thought that a running engine is one which always has little explosions going on inside the combustion chamber. But without fuel, that can't be possible, nor without air. But if the engine isn't running, how is it that you can get right back on the throttle immediately, and why does it sound pretty much just like it does when it's running (as compared to a dead rolling engine which you can compression start by popping the clutch)??
There's something I'm missing here, I'm sure.
