the cars weren't as fast, but in the 50s, 60s and 70s there was a lot going on out there. Drivers would get into dices that would go on lap after lap.... it made for great spectating. Of course it was a LOT more dangerous, and the tracks and cars weren't as safe as they are now.
Ovals are all a yawn, like drag racing, IMHO.
I've always thought that a car has to go straight, turn right, turn left and stop. For F1 (or any road racing) you build a car that can do all four.
For ovals you build half a car: it can go and turn left.
For drags you build a quarter of a car: it can only go.
Not to discount the engineering in these cars, especially the acceleration in a dragster, but it's just not road racing. I'd rather go to a good SCCA or other club race than any oval. It's simply better racing.
