...XP, 98, 95, etc... will screw up the longer the computer is on. Microsoft suggests a full turn off and reboot on systems every 12 hours. At least that is what a Microsoft tech told me when I needed some debugging. When working on important documents, you need to first do a full reboot, not a restart, but a full turn off and turn back on. You also need to set auto backup at 5 minutes or less. On really important spreadsheets I back up manually and every 1 minute. When you do freeze and need to do a hard boot, I have usually found I need to open Microsoft Word (Excel, Powerpoint, etc...)without openning a document. What happens is the document that was last running comes up as it was. SAVE THAT IMMEDIATELY, or it will dissappear forever.
You should also probably run Norton Utilities ASAP to see if you hav a virus or other problem.
I do not believe frequent computer reboots are necessary with Linux, and I have associates who have left their computers on for months at a time with Linux OS.
I am not sure why Microsoft needs this. Maybe Scott can answer.
I feel your pain and I empathiz. I have been there and nothing is worse than working hard and then losing it all.
