I deal & have dealt w MS operating systems since MS stock was a buck. (dating myself big time..) Anyways, the 9X/ME was garbage, 3.11 waas much more stable. As others have said: NT/2K (my favorite)/ XP-2k3 systems are very stable, IF you don't throw a lot of 3rd party junk on it, and have your service pack or patch levels updated and do not use old drivers.
I normally reboot a 2k/2k3 server OS every six months or so, usally 'cause I've done an update that requires the reboot. All my laptops are 2k or xp pro, and I'll leave some of them running for months with no issues.
My wifes 2k pro machine howeveer is another story: lots of "free" stuff on it, constant issues. I find that DLLs and drivers get replaced by the lovely add-ons without notice, and cause havoc.
Do a clean, from format install, get new drivers for all the hardware from the manufacturers' site, do not subscribe to freeware, and as others have said, check the hardware. I have seen flacky problems caused by adding hardware (including unpowered USb devices) that will bring a power supply down to its' current limit.
