the driveway, but we live in a semi-rural area so it's not the same as living in a more tightly packed area. But we always lock elsewhere, even locally. The bad guys are opportunistic and an unlocked door makes it easy.
In some ways, though, it can be better to leave a car unlocked so it doesn't get trashed if someone breaks in. I was in Germany last week and a colleague drove over from Spain. Their 7-series BMW was broken into in France, all their luggage and some other stuff stolen. About $4,000 in damage to the car--console, rear door and glass, rear window. Had it been unlocked and the alarm off they still would have lost their stuff, but he wouldn't be repairing a car.
