I agree - it is tough to get There from Here.
Have done the Toronto to Boston route a few times, with a trip up through main afterwards. Take the I90 all the way across to the Mass Pike, and then up to Portland.
The other way is to head for Quebec, and then take the route from Sherbrooke across NH, and then down. Canadian money at par (at least to NH!).
We stopped at the Crocker House in Hancock Point, near Bar Harbor, last summer on our way to PEI. Well worth it (we had two 1.5 year olds, and they were accommodating). First class restaurant in the middle of nowhere. I can recommend it strongly. Very Maine, and not directly on the beaten track. Check out the Library next door to the Inn.
They have a website: "The Crocker House Country Inn, tucked away on the peninsula of Hancock Point, was built in 1884 and carefully restored in 1986. Its quiet, out of the way location, fine cuisine and individually appointed guest rooms, each with a private bath, all combine to make the Crocker House a refreshing and memorable experience. Since purchasing the Inn in 1980, we have strived to create an environment that is comfortable and rejuvenating. We are a proud member of Select Registry-Distinguished Inns of North America."
Have a safe trip!
