In the case of SAAB I think there is enough left of SAAB physically that it could still indeed operate as an independent business unit. Although the clock is ticking ever faster and the hour late. It would need some sort of transition agreement. Also in this day and age it would realistically need a partnership or to be a unit of another automotive interest so that there could be some developmental and production synergy. It would be too much to expect them to operate in complete isolation. The exception might be if SAAB transformed itself into a high profit low volume nitch product but that would be a radicially different company.
The real problem is that SAAB hasn't really been financially viable in years even as part of GM. It would take a big turn around for SAAB to even operate as a viable independent unit let along an independent company.
No idea what Jag situation might be. The Jag name and mystic probably ensures it will live on in some form.
