I have just moved back to the UK from USA and cannot tell you how popular Saabs are over here, my local Saab showroom in Oxford (a very small city compared to most in t he US) is infinitley more busy than the one I used in Torrance CA 15 miles from LA). So far customer service and attention to detail form the service advisor is very good
The 9-3 is a definite 3 series rival, with some magazines saying it is a truely viable alternative (Top Gear) to the 3 series (Although I admit this may be compared to the last model}.
In terms of quality the 9-5 is rated 46th out of all mainstream UK vehicles and the 9-3 SS (2003-4) 75th (about half way I believe)despite the survey being based on the early 9-3 SS which as we all know had a few 'teething' problems. Mercedes are definitely worse, Audis are about the same and BMW slightly better.
I did drive a few used 9-5s across the range before settling on 02 aero and they did seem to be better bulit than my 04 Linear which I had in the US although this might be different if I had to live with the cars.
Saabs are considered very good cars over here, alongside BMW's Mercedes and Audi and sell very well. I do think the 9-3 and 9-5 Sportswagons have something to do with this as wagons are very popular. Here's hoping Saab can achieve this in the US.
I sure do miss the California sunshine!
