San Diego, and maybe California in general is pretty much the same. They even had a round and round with the San Diego County Fair on a *new* policy that didn't want to allow Peace officers to carry their weapons while at the Fair. The Fair guys went back to the previous policy. I mean think about it, what if you are the Cop and are *anywhere* and meet up with someone you arrested sometime back for a violent crime (armed?). Would *you* want to be unarmed?
Also, the car stopped in front of the guys house at a cul-de-sac. So it appears driver stopped on his own, ie wasn't "pulled over". No information at this time if the Officer had called for "backup" etc. The driver got out of his car. Statement from the Officer that he identified himself, still waiting on investigation on that. The officer had followed them for awhile and the reason given was a driving erratic. There has been a real crackdown on drunk drivers in San Diego in general, so that could be true statement. Also, the girl friend was subsequently charged with DUI. Haven't seen anything on the DUI status of the guy but since he did get shot and went via ambulance to the hospital for surgery and I doubt there would be any way to prove or disprove drivers alcohol status before getting shot.
Again, as Mike said, a wild and unfolding incident. Fortunately the guy is ok.
