I carry a tow rope, jumper cables, basic tools, spare serpentine belt, plugs, warning triangles, and a FLEECE blanket and 'space blanket' which works as a poncho and heat reflector. I carry this stuff year 'round. Oh, got a CB radio and cell, and GPS too.
Long trips get a DI, more tools, and food and drink. REAL trips get full camping gear so I could hold up a long time.
