The mapping companies have done a lousy job of including seasonality/other aspects of roads. I had an experience in upstate NY where my GPS took a route over a pass using a seasonally closed road. Thankfully it was summer and the car wasn't damaged from the ruts in the road. Even in summer this road was not great and the GPS maps should have reflected that and sent me around.
If you look up more about this incident it seams that mapquest, google maps, etc. did until they updated them send people onto Bear Camp Road as the best route between where the Kims' were going. Then throw in the vandalized gate (what where the vandals trying to steal anyway? trees?) and anyone could have ended up in this mess.
What I can't figure out is why you would keep driving? I mean you get off an interstate onto some dirt road in the mountains and just keep going instead of getting back on the interstate. It isn't like they were looking for a camp sight.
