As you can tell by the other posts, buying cars on Ebay is a mixed bag-you might get lucky, you might not. When I was a dealer I bought a couple of cars on Ebay. One was a '92 900TCV and it worked out alright. Others were not so good. My approach to Ebay is that it's a basic contract-you agree to buy sight unseen, they agree to describe the car accurately (and if they don't specifically say the transmission shifts perfectly etc. then you have no business assuming it does). If they don't describe it accurately then I feel no obligation to honor my end. I won a '94 Land Rover once from a dealer. After I had won the bidding I called to make arrangements. Now suddenly the guy starts giving me a list of things that are wrong with the car that weren't in his desciption. The description said it runs perfectly, now I find out it's missing and the check engine light is on-which can get real expensive on a Range Rover. Ultimately I told the guy that he misrepresented the car, I wouldn't have bid on it had I known all this stuff was wrong, and I wasn't going to buy it. He agreed, gave me a good feedback and I gave him one and we went our seperate ways. The only way I've bought on ebay is to give them a small deposit, hop on a plane with a cashiers check, if the car is as described I buy it, if not I don't. As for all the stipulations that you have to pay in full within three days and all the other BS, I just ignore it. If they play straight, so do I-if they don't, then I don't.
