mp3 is the file format that came before ipods. MP3 has been around since the mid/late 90s, and the files can be played on any computer with windows media player, real audio, etc. when the format first came out microsoft was reluctant to support the format, probably cause it was going to kill their .wav format, but its now supported by their windows media player. You can still download mp3s for "free" by using the gnutella network (download "Limewire" or "MusicCity" both are free download programs) but technically its illegal. Napster got busted a few years ago and was bought out and is now a pay service. If you want to play mp3s in your car, you can get a newer head unit with a slot for portable flash cards (the same thing in digital cameras) and you can also get usb support so you can plug in thumb drives (very cool).
