OT: Home Improvement - Installing ceiling light fixture Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 7 Jan 2007 13:26:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just want to share a trick I conceived & used today when installing ceiling mounted light fixtures.
For me, the worst part of the job is placing the canopy portion of the light fixture on the ceiling junction box. Trying to find the heads of the extended mounting screws, push them thru the fibregalss insulation blanket, and have them properly allign with the key-hole shaped slots in the canopy is always a stressful (and sometimes profanity laced) experience.
The trick I used today was to take two drinking straws, insert them thru the large end of the key-hole slots for half their length, then place the upper end of the straws over the mounting screws. Once lined up, I simply had to raise the canopy to the ceiing and the straws guided the mounting screws right thru the mounting holes. Wow, was it easy!
I used supermarket drinking straws so I had to slit one end so they would slip over the screw heads. I imagine the oversized fast food variety of straws would fit over the screw heads without being slit.
Hopefully this will help others with what is the most ackward part (particularly when you wear bi-focals) of installing ceiling lights.
