i was in the exact same spot as you are. i have a rowing machine in the basement and use it fairly regularly, but strength training was tough to come by. and it seemed that with my work schedule it was tough to even get to the gym which is only about 10 min away...
i was very leary at first due to the infomercials, etc. but i am pleasantly suprised. the range of motion feels good, the platform supports more exercises than i have even begun to attempt, and it is completely silent. i went back and forth between universal and free weight workouts after college and preferred the challenges of the fre weights. i travel quite a bit and work on some of the universal machines in the hotels and i can say i have never found one i liked. we have ours in the basement underneath our bedroom. the machine is so quiet, i can get in a late night or early morning workout in when my wife is still in bed without fear of waking her.
one potential drawback is the weight. i purchased the bowflex blaze (with the bench that folds up) and it comes with a total of 210#'s worth of rods. there are two slots to add two more rods (50#'s each) so you could get to 310. while this may seem light at some point for squats or bench press, it is plenty of weight for most other excersies.
i looked at dumbells and a bench but ran into needing many different weights. i also looked at the bowflex dumbells as an all-in-one unit, but the cost was around $400 without the stand, and there were quite a few plastic pieces. i figured with the actual bowflew machine, i get so much more versatility with exercises and weights.
keep in mind i have only used it for a couple weeks. so i am still in the early stages of looking fwd to working on it and may be somewhat biased as a result. i can't speak to longevity of the machine, but i am glad so far with the purchase.
