I went there on a dive trip aboard the Galaogos Aggressor in '98. I think almost all trips are liveaboard boat trips, diving ot not. Its the only way to get to the different islands. The first few days we spent at Darwin and Wolf islands. Strickly diving there with no landings. Hammerheads and Galapogos sharks were like cars on the expressway during rush hour. All over the place. At Darwin, we came across a huge whale shark, about the size of a bus. Gave her a little pet and got some great video.
When we came back south to the main island group, we did a land hike every day. Just like National Geo, the animals are totally unafraid, but don't touch. The only giant tortoises we saw were at the Darwin center. Did see penguins and many seals and iguanas(land and sea). Birds are dependant as to what island your on. Albatross, flightless cormorants, frigates, finches, etc. Overall great trip with good food, frienly boat, great dives, and interesting land trips. I'd go back in a minute, but so many other places to go that I have't been.
