Interesting. I have just the opposite reaction; I absolutely love them. I tend to use them all the time and dislike driving my wife's car that doesn't have them. I always find myself "reaching" for them in her car and being disappointed that they aren't there. Yes, it would be nice to have them be programmable like soft keys for functions you tend to use more frequently but as they sit now, I use the volume and next button constantly.
In fact, that was one other reason I dislike the Subaru Legacy GT - the two steering wheel controls were for manually shifting the automatic transmission. I suspect the only time I would have ever used them was on the test drive and if I were to buy the car I would never use them again.
