Track II and IV are different, both IV's are the same. Track II Low is the original. This one has been around over 10 years. They had some problems with soles exploding around the year 2000, but I haven't seen one of those since they reformulated the PU a bit. The Track II is all PU, but dual density so the inner part is very cushy and the outer part is hard for durability (I've seen a cross-section). The Track II and IV Highs are just the boot version of the shoe.
The Track IV was introduced around 2004 and has been great for them. The difference is the outermost sole is their RubberTech system. While this will sacrifice a tiny bit in the durability department, the traction is better and the flexibility is better right out of the box. The cushy PU is still there on the inside. The old all-PU Track II breaks in just as nicely though. I actually have both shoes (companies love giving freebies) and, once the Track II breaks in (about a week), it is just as soft. But the traction on ice and snow is agreeably better on the IV.
The "New Track IV Low" is the same as the Track IV Low Plain Toe but has stitching at the toe. If you find a "Track II Plain Toe", they were discontinued last year and are old stock.
As for Gore-Tex making your feet hot, it really shouldn't. The type of Gore-tex Ecco and Clarks use is very lightweight (adds to the price though) and allows air to pass out, but won't let water in. Last time Ecco came to my company for a clinic for the sales staff, the rep had a cool glove made out of the Gore-tex, and a plain latex glove. She had a volunteer put on the GT glove and the latex glove and wear them for the duration of the meeting to see which had was sweating. The salesgirl said the GT-gloved hand was completely dry, while the latex-gloved hand was sweaty and hot.
Hope that helps. I can't stress enough that the Track series won't feel as good out of the box as some of the other ones, but will feel as good or better within a week or two. Oh yeah, the innersoles are replaceable, and new ones make the shoe feel like new after about a year of wearing the old ones down ($20).
