I went to Israel two years ago for work and it was a very memorable trip. The Israelis are incredibly welcoming of anyone that comes to visit the country and are a very smart group of people. The Mediterranean beachfront near the hotel strip is great...nice beachest too. Try some Israeli red wine from the Golan Heights (Yarden Merlot was as good as any French or Californian red I've had). Any Israeli Arab I met was wonderful as well...

I stayed at the Renaissance Hotel in Tel Aviv and had a wonderful time. I did do a trip to Jerusalem which is history overload...it was dark when we got there, and the Muslim quarter did seem a bit less safe than other parts, but no worse that any bad part of an American city. The wailing wall is very interesting. As a non-religious person, going to the wall and being amongst the Orthodox people there was intense and something I won't forget. If you are in Jerusalem during the day, the market will be open and the Muslim/Palestinian way of selling is by bartering. I didn't know this and ended up paying 10X more for some Israeli spices than I should...oops! Be strong and barter....you can buy saffron for less than a 10th of what you'd buy it at a gourmet food store here in the US!

Macabee beer is great too.

I was pulled out for the hour and a half long inquisition at Ben Gurion airport because my laptop had a crack in the casing...I'm a telecom consultant (and Israel is a hotbed of telecom technology) so I go through laptops every couple of years! :-) It was all young 20 something women, and it was intense..but just be honest, and you have nothing to worry about. They searched me head to toe, asked me if I was "ok" or "nervous" and I said "I was told this is the safest airport in the world, and I now know why...."

Buy your significant other some Ahava hair or body products...fantastic Israeli made stuff!!!

I would go back in a heartbeat....I absolutely loved it!

Have fun and enjoy...most people are petrified to go there and Israelis know that! Life is too short to worry about it and I felt no less safe in Tel Aviv as I did crossing the road in LA or getting on a bus in London!

Best,
Paul H.
