I assume you have an aluminum frame? They do eventually crack; it’s just the way aluminum fatigues. It’s the same reason that if you bend an aluminum frame, you usually can’t bend it back without cracking it. Steel is a lot more repairable. Most shops won’t try to bend aluminum let alone weld it.
Do you have a ton of hours on the bike? An ’03 seems pretty young to crack unless you’re putting in a lot of time on tough trails and maybe are of a, um, robust persuasion. That seems like a strange place for a fatigue failure to me though, so it may well be a manufacturing flaw or it look a hard wack at some point.
Good luck with the warranty coverage; hopefully they’ll treat you right.
