I avoid the brand name supermarket foods. I've lost cats to kidney disease and it isn't pretty. I'm not saying that Friskies causes kidney disease, but some of the proteins they use are harder on the kidneys, so I like to start early.
Believe it or not, cats can have food allergies. An indelicate subject, but what do you see in the pan? Firm, not runny stool is a good sign. Not too much urine ( a sign of diabetes). One of our cats was losing weight but still eating - it turned out to be a food allergy. Nothing major, but you'd be surprised what they put into commercial cat foods - lots of things, which gives the opportunity to be exposed to more things the cat could be allergic to.
We had the cat tested for food allergies, and found what she couldn't eat. We read the bags, and many of the foods you can find at the vets (yes, more expensive) don't have a lot of the common allergens (like peas).
The non-major market cat foods are more expensive. But like our Saabs, we've found that good maintenance leads to long, active lives. We had one cat that made it to 22, one to 15, and have two now at 12 (one with the allergies) and going strong.
