I understand that the consensus seems to be not to use amalgam fillings because of the mercury exposure although there is still plenty of debate ongoing. The problem I have is that the composite fillings seem to deteriorate after a number of years and then either chip or enable decay between the filling and the tooth. I have had more than one composite filling replaced each year for the past few years each for the same reason. I suspect that these were early composites, but it still seems to be a maintenance item.

Are there any alternatives? Better composite options? My dentist says no composite will outlast amalgam.
