I was in the same boat as you - I had a 36" Sony tube TV, it was high def, but not widescreen. I was sick of looking at the black bars on top and bottom. I also have an entertainment center armoire that my wife will not let go. This limited the size of the screen I could get to 42", and no speakers on the side! I ended up with the Panasonic TH42PX75U plasma. Massachusetts has a tax free weekend every August and I was able to buy it for $1050. For the price, you cannot go wrong. The picture is great and the sound from the speakers (on the bottom) is perfectly adequate for the time when the Bose surround sound is not on - 90% of the time. I have seen the same TV for as low as $850 a few weeks ago at Sears.
