There are a number of similar "certification" processes, most recently Six Sigma. They all sound good on paper and in general principle, and DO have their good points and benefits, but they are largely just cash cows for the certification companies and the people who run the training and certification programs. The biggest fans are those who evangelize for the program or get their Six Sigma Black Belt. Everyone else thinks it's a PITA. Or a joke.
There is a benefit for companies that are say, ISO 9000 certified, if they are to merge or collaborate with another ISO 9000 firm, because they will understand the processes, audits, etc. Also good in proposals because thhe hype has made it something perceived to be important. But as for making a superior product I think the value is limited. Like you say, you can build crap, but it can be ISO 9000 crap.
